Global Trade Item Number

With the help of the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), it is possible to identify every product or package along a supply chain worldwide. The aim of the identification number is to ensure seamless control of supply and delivery processes. The term GTIN replaces the former term EAN (European Article Number) since 2009. The number itself does not contain any information about the product, but is only used for assignment with the help of further information such as product characteristics or the price. GTIN enables standardization or uniformity, so that 90% of all goods are marked with a GTIN. They are either printed directly with the number or provided with a barcode label.
