Retrofit

Retrofit generally refers to the process of modifying or modernisation of existing equipment or systems to improve their performance or to add new capabilities. This can include implementing of new software, adding new sensors or automation systems, or replacing old parts with new, more efficient components.

When retrofitting in the intralogistics environment, hardware and software are mutually dependent, especifically with regard to the WMS. Therefore, it is important to consider the compatibility and integration of both elements during the retrofit process.

The goal of retrofitting is to improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of logistics operations, while also reducing costs and downtime. In parallel, an improved embedding into the modern IT environment can be achieved.

Examples of retrofit in logistics can include: - Modernisation of WMS to support automation and real-time tracking - Replacement of sensors, actors, drives and controllers of an automated storage system - Renewal of components in conveyors, sorting systems and other material handling equipment

Retrofit projects usually have a significant impact on daily operations. It is advisable to plan carefully, budget accordingly and consider planned downtime to minimise disruptions and ensure a smooth transition.
